Learn more about founder Kim Adams
and her mission of
100000 Tassels
Kim Adams is well known in the Lapeer area as the owner of the former Katie's Spa. For those who are familiar, Kim's spa was named for Katie Kirkpatrick Godwin, a young woman whose legacy lives on because of the efforts of Kim and the Lapeer community.
"Katie was my inspiration," said Kim, owner of the previous spa that specialized in providing wigs (and other items) and support to cancer patients. Back then, Kim's mission was "to have Katie's spirit live on through us."
In addition to supporting people suffering with cancer, Kim provides help to the community in various ways. She's a member of the Lapeer County Community Foundation's Women's Fund. That organization provides educational scholarships to women needing help pursuing their dreams.
Recently, Kim has begun a new journey founding 100000 Tassels. This organization will give away $100,000 to Lapeer community charities and groups in $10,000 increments. Kim wants to donate to "wellness." "I believe in making a difference in someone's life is as good as it gets," Kim said. "I want to be a part of something bigger than myself and inspire others to do the same." Kim credits her mother Rosemary Bussure, her sisters Kristine and Geri, her husband George, and other family members for inspiration and support. "I am blessed to have such a wonderful mother and family who has always supported me and my endeavors," Kim said.
The other component to 100000 Tassels is, of course, the tassels. Kim and her Tassels Team will be making and selling a variety of tassels - as necklaces, purse adornment, high school and college wear, pet collars, and more - throughout Lapeer County. She plans to have vendor booths and provide tassels to other vendors and attend numerous functions like county fairs, Women's Night Out, and festivals. She also will offer classes in tassel making and help groups create their own unique tassels.
"There are so many ways to use tassels," Kim said. "They are beautiful, fun, and unique. We will even personalize tassels so people can can a one-of-a-kind piece that represents them in a special way."
Kim hopes that people in the area will join her in this endeavor, whether it's helping the Tassel Team make tassels, selling tassels, or getting their own organizations involved.
"There is strength in numbers," Kim said. "The more we join together, the more good we can do for others. My goal is ultimately for the organization to give away $100,000 to area charities and groups but also provide a fun way for people to get involved. And who doesn't want to wear a beautiful tassel and look amazing?!"
